Social engineering is the psychological manipulation of people into performing actions or divulging confidential personal information such as your banking PIN/passwords.

How does one commit it?

There are different ways, one can commit this fraud:

  • Fraudsters often call an elderly person, pretend to be a family member and express a need for urgent cash
  • Fraudsters often act as tax/government officials, over email and try to manipulate the victim into leaking their personal details.
  • Fraudsters can also engage in Phishing/Vishing/Smishing
  • Oftentimes, Fraudsters hack into a genuine e-mail account, send mail to friends and/or colleagues, claiming to be in trouble and ask for money.

How to save myself from social engineering?

Do's

  • Share information on need to know basis
  • If asked to disclose confidential information, find out why such information is required
  • Shred documents, especially confidential, if you're discarding them
  • Find out where your printouts are, if they're missing

Dont's

  • Assume that the enquirer has a right to know the required information
  • Discuss anything in public places
  • Leave sensitive information unattended
  • Print sensitive information, or keep printing if unable to trace previous print-outs
